A clash erupted between security forces and Naxals in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur National Park area on Thursday.
Security forces neutralised one Naxal and recovered an automatic weapon from the site. Security personnel have encircled a large group of Naxals, and the operation is ongoing.
According to a police officer cited by PTI, the exchange of fire began in a forest within Indravati National Park when a joint team of security personnel launched an anti-Naxal operation following information about the presence of senior Maoist cadres.
Intelligence input indicated the presence of several senior Maoist leaders, including Central Committee member Gautam Sudhakar, Telangana State Committee member Bandi Prakash, and Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee member Pappa Rao, in the area.
Acting swiftly on the information, joint forces of STF, DRG, and CoBRA were deployed for a search operation in the region.
The officials are yet to confirm the total number of Naxals killed.
Earlier, on 30 May, three people were injured in Bijapur after a Naxalite-planted improvised explosive device (IED) detonated. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. near Bandepara village, under Madded police station jurisdiction.
The victims, Gote Joga, 45, Badde Sunil, 20, and Vivek Dodhi, 17, were walking to Bandepara for work when they triggered a pressure IED. The subsequent explosion caused serious injuries to their legs and faces, an officer said.
All three were residents of Dampaya village in the area.
Recently, on June 2, as many as sixteen Naxalites, including six carrying a collective cash reward of Rs 25 lakh, surrendered in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district.
According to an official cited by PTI, following the surrender, the village became Naxalite-free, making it eligible for development projects of Rs 1 crore as per a new scheme of the state government.
The 16 cadres also include a woman. All of them surrendered before senior police and CRPF officials citing disappointment with the “hollow" and “inhuman" Maoist ideology and atrocities by ultras on local tribals.
This was the second such village panchayat in the district to be Naxal-free after the state government recently introduced the scheme.
In April, another village, Badesatti was declared Naxal-free after all 11 lower-rung Naxalites from there surrendered before police.
