The New York Knicks continued their aggressive reshaping of draft assets Thursday night, striking another deal during the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, New York traded the No.
31 and No. 55 selections to the Houston Rockets in exchange for the No. 39 and No. 53 picks, along with a 2029 second-round selection originally belonging to the Sacramento Kings. The move further highlights the Knicks' strategy of accumulating future assets while maintaining financial flexibility. It also capped another busy chapter in a draft week that saw New York execute multiple trades and ultimately move away from holding a first-round selection despite entering the event with the No.

Knicks turn two picks into a bigger draft haul in Rockets deal
The transaction represented the latest step in a draft strategy centered on maximizing value rather than targeting a specific prospect. By moving down eight spots from No. 31 to No. 39 and shifting from No. 55 to No. 53, New York secured an additional future second-round asset while retaining multiple selections on Day 2.

The Knicks entered the draft as one of the league's most active teams. Their activity began with a trade involving the Los Angeles Lakers, where New York moved the No.
24 pick for the No. 25 selection and cash considerations.
That was followed by another deal with the Dallas Mavericks. After selecting Spanish guard Sergio De Larrea at No. 25, the Knicks immediately traded his rights to Dallas in exchange for the No. 30 pick and two future second-round selections. New York then flipped that pick to the Phoenix Suns, receiving the No. 47 selection, the draft rights to Melvin Ajinca, two additional second-round picks and cash considerations.According to SNY NBA Insider Ian Begley, the latest trade could carry financial significance beyond the draft board. Begley noted that "by trading out of first pick in second round of draft, the Knicks have positioned themselves to find players more likely to accept rookie minimum deal via second round pick exception."
Why the Knicks' draft strategy could impact their offseason plans
The flurry of transactions comes just weeks after New York captured the 2026 NBA championship and entered an offseason focused on balancing contention with long-term roster management.Begley previously reported that the Knicks' series of draft-day moves helped save approximately $3.4 million as the organization works to remain below the NBA's second apron for the 2026-27 season. That financial breathing room could prove valuable as the front office evaluates roster upgrades and contract decisions throughout the summer.Meanwhile, Houston wasted no time using the newly acquired No. 31 pick on Ohio State guard Bruce Thornton, the Buckeyes' all-time leading scorer. The selection gave the Rockets an immediate opportunity to add backcourt depth, while the Knicks continued stockpiling assets that could become useful in future trades or roster-building efforts.
