The New Orleans Pelicans secured a win over the Utah Jazz on Saturday night, but the celebration did not last long. Zion Williamson exited that game after tweaking his right ankle, and by Sunday, the team ruled him out against the Los Angeles Clippers.
The setback ended what had been the longest healthy stretch of his NBA career.Williamson had played in 35 consecutive games, a personal best since entering the league as the No. 1 overall pick in 2019. That streak now stops at 35. It is no secret that the franchise has built its identity around his presence, and his latest injury raises concern as the regular season moves toward its closing stretch.

Zion Williamson will miss Sunday’s game after spraining his right ankle during the second quarter against Utah.
He had been listed as a game-time decision before the Pelicans made the cautious call to sit him out. His next opportunity to return comes Tuesday against the Los Angeles Lakers.Head coach James Borrego addressed the situation without offering a firm timetable. “Hopefully, it’s nothing serious, and we’ll have him back out there very soon,” Borrego said on Sunday.
The 25-year-old forward has appeared in 45 games this season, the third-highest total of his seven-year career.
He is averaging 21.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 58.5 percent from the field. During February, he helped the Pelicans win six of eight games, posting 20.9 points per night in that span. His career averages stand at 24.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. Yet durability remains a constant theme. Since debuting in 2020 after a preseason meniscus tear, Williamson has battled a foot fracture, multiple hamstring strains, a finger fracture and other setbacks.
How will the New Orleans Pelicans adjust their roster amid Zion Williamson’s injury?
With Williamson sidelined, frontcourt minutes will shift. Derik Queen and Karlo Matkovic are candidates to absorb a larger workload. Neither replicates Williamson’s scoring gravity or interior force, which means New Orleans must spread responsibilities across the rotation.Williamson is in the third season of a five-year, $197.2 million contract. He earns $39.4 million this season, with $42.2 million due next year and $44.9 million in 2027 28.
