Nikola Jokic scored 55 points, equalling the highest-scoring performance in the NBA this season, and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Denver Nuggets defeated the short-handed Los Angeles Clippers 130-116 on Wednesday night for their sixth consecutive win.

Oklahoma City star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander also scored 55 points in a double-overtime game against Indiana on Oct. 23.

Jokic contributed 25 of Denver’s 39 points in the first quarter, added eight in the second, and returned with 19 in the third. He sat out most of the fourth quarter before scoring three points to complete his night, going 18 of 23 from the field. He missed out on adding to his league-leading six triple-doubles with six assists. The Serbian centre was 5 of 6 on 3-pointers and made 14 of 16 free throws.

James Harden scored 23 points, making all 10 of his free throws, and had eight rebounds and five assists to lead the struggling Clippers. The team suffered a major blow earlier in the day with the news that Bradley Beal will miss the rest of the season due to a fractured hip. They are also without Kawhi Leonard, who is sidelined with a sprained ankle and foot.

Jordan Miller came off the bench to add a career-high 22 points, while Ivica Zubac scored 18 points as Los Angeles lost its sixth consecutive game, falling to 3-8.

Despite Jokic’s prolific scoring, the Clippers kept it close in the first half. After trailing by 10 in the opening quarter, they took a 10-point lead and were ahead 68-63 at halftime.

Jokic dominated the third quarter, twice scoring six consecutive points. The Nuggets led 106-90 going into the fourth quarter.

The Nuggets will travel to Minnesota on Saturday night for their next game, while the Clippers visit the Dallas Mavericks in an NBA Cup game on Friday night to start a seven-game trip.
