Ncuti Gatwa, star of ‘Doctor Who’, bid a bittersweet goodbye to the show after 2 seasons as his character met his end, by sacrificing himself in order to save his friend Belinda’s baby.Gatwa’s exit from the show was nothing short of dramatic and unique. The actor’s character was seen sacrificing himself to save his friend’s daughter. In his final scene, Gatwa is covered with a bright light and then suddenly transforms into British actress and singer Billie Piper.
Piper had previously played the Doctor’s assistant Rose Tyler. The show’s finale even ended with the words “Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. And introducing Billie Piper, written on a blank screen."While talking about his exit from the show in behind-the-scenes footage shared on the official social media handle, Ncuti shared that his the Doctor's end, "was meant to be". He shared that “It was always the plan to do this many seasons, because it’s a role that demands a lot of you physically and emotionally and mentally.
The actors playing the doctor are only actors playing the doctor; unfortunately, we are mere mortals.
I would love to have the energy and the youth to be able to do this full-time for the rest of my life, but my knees are telling me it’s time.”The actor addressed his exit from the popular show, saying that it “felt like the right timing and the right energy, and it’s felt melancholic and bittersweet.”He also expressed his gratitude towards the show’s creators for casting him and that it has been a “real pleasure and honour”.
In an interview with BBC as well, Ncuti shared, “You know when you get cast, at some point you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver, and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it. This journey has been one that I will never forget and a role that will be part of me forever.”He also talked about how special this was to him. “There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted into this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years and is truly loved by so many across the globe,” the actor continued.
