After the National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo motu cognisance of the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student in Kolkata, it is set to meet the victim and her family today, sources said.

The incident reported on June 25 has shaken the public conscience. The Commission remains deeply concerned about the safety, dignity, and well-being of the victim.

NCW Chairperson, Vijaya Rahatkar, has written to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, expressing concern over the gang-rape of a college student in the city and telling officials to conduct an immediate and time-bound probe into the matter.

She directed full cooperation by the police to facilitate the NCW Member Dr Archana Mujumdar’s access to the victim and her family.

The NCW Chairperson asked for an immediate and confidential internal medical examination of the victim without delay. 

In the letter, Rajatkar further asked for the submission of internal and external medical reports to the NCW within 3 days and also demanded strong safety and security arrangements for the victim and her family.

Earlier in the day, the security guard of South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata’s Kasba, identified as Pinaki Banerjee, 55, has also been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of the law student.

Till now, four people have been arrested. A complaint was filed on Thursday night, and the Kasba police station arrested three people in connection with the incident, identified as Manojit Mishra, 31, Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, 20. They were produced before the court and sent to police custody till July 1.

According to the survivor’s complaint, the incident unfolded on Wednesday evening when one of the accused made unwanted advances, expressing romantic interest, which she rejected. “I cried and asked him to let me go. I told them I have a boyfriend and I love my boyfriend. But he did not agree," she said in the complaint.

In her complaint, the victim alleged that the accused hit her with a hockey stick. During the incident, she experienced breathing difficulties and asked for an inhaler. After using it, she was taken to the security guard’s room on the ground floor, next to the students’ union office, where the assault allegedly continued.
