New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal on Saturday clarified that Delhi’s upscale Jor Bagh colony has not been renamed “Anupam Colony", stating that the term is only a recognition tag awarded to residential areas promoting sustainable and zero-waste living practices
The clarification followed a social media post by Priyanka Chaturvedi, leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), who initially suggested on X that one of Delhi’s elite neighbourhoods had lost its original identity.

She later acknowledged that she had misunderstood the NDMC announcement.
So I have been informed that it isn’t a name change but an initiative by NDMC to recognise those societies that are setting the benchmark for self-sustainable, zero-waste living.Well done Jor Bagh! The bragging rights get more weightier now 😃 https://t.co/EG5vDfDWBt— Priyanka Chaturvedi🇮🇳 (@priyankac19) May 16, 2026
Replying to her remarks, Chahal explained that the poster circulating online did “not" indicate any renaming exercise. Instead, it referred to Jor Bagh being officially recognised as an “Anupam Colony" under the civic body’s sustainability programme.
“The name hasn’t changed. Anupam is merely a certification tag," Chahal said. He added that the formal declaration ceremony would take place in Jor Bagh on Sunday along with a plantation drive under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" campaign.
According to Chahal, the “Anupam Colony" initiative has been designed as a model programme for decentralised waste management. The project aims to honour colonies that adopt strong waste segregation systems and environmentally sustainable practices.
He said colonies receiving the certification are expected to ensure complete waste segregation at source, process biodegradable and horticultural waste through on-site composting systems, adopt mechanised dust-free cleaning methods and significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.
The NDMC official emphasised that the tag signifies progress towards self-sustained waste management and is not linked to any change in administrative status or locality name.
Chahal further noted that Jor Bagh joins several other residential areas that have already received the recognition, including New Moti Bagh, Kaka Nagar, Bapu Dham and Aradhana Cooperative Housing Society.
Following the clarification, Chaturvedi posted that she had been informed it was “not a name change but an initiative by NDMC to recognise those societies that are setting the benchmark for self-sustainable, zero-waste living", congratulating Jor Bagh and saying the colony’s ‘bragging rights get more weightier now’.
