Double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra is set to renew his rivalry with reigning champion Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan in a much-anticipated javelin clash at the Diamond League meet in Silesia, Poland, on August 16.
This will mark their first encounter since the dramatic finale at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Revisiting the Paris Olympics Duel
Exactly one year after their iconic battle in Paris on August 8, 2024, Chopra and Nadeem will face off once again. In that unforgettable Olympic final, Nadeem stunned the field with a sensational throw of 92.97m to clinch gold, relegating Chopra—India’s Tokyo 2021 Olympic champion—to the silver medal with a best effort of 89.45m.
According to a statement from World Athletics, both athletes are confirmed entrants in the men’s javelin event at the Silesia Diamond League.
Season So Far: Contrasting Paths
Since Paris, Chopra has maintained a busy competition schedule. The 27-year-old has participated in four Diamond League events, two major meets in Chorzow (Poland) and Ostrava (Czech Republic), and also won the inaugural NC Classic in Bengaluru on July 5.
Under the guidance of legendary javelin coach Jan Železný, Chopra captured the Ostrava Golden Spike title on June 25 with a throw of 85.29m. He followed that with a winning 86.18m performance as both host and competitor at the NC Classic.
By contrast, the 28-year-old Nadeem has taken a more selective approach. After clinching gold at the Asian Championships in Gumi, South Korea, on May 31 with a throw of 86.40m, Nadeem ended his season with the Paris Olympics triumph. That remains his only competition in 2024 so far.
Missed Meeting in Bengaluru
Notably, Nadeem had been invited by Chopra to participate in the NC Classic, which was originally scheduled for May 24. However, Nadeem declined the invitation, citing a scheduling conflict with his preparation for the Asian Championships, which ran from May 27 to 31.
The NC Classic was later postponed to July 5 following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir that claimed the lives of 26 tourists and heightened military tensions between India and Pakistan.
Looking Ahead: Tokyo World Championships
While the Silesia showdown promises to be a highlight of the season, Chopra has his eyes firmly set on the World Championships in Tokyo from September 13 to 21. The Indian star will be aiming to defend the world title he won in 2023, adding another chapter to his illustrious career.
