Japan’s remote Tokara Islands have been rocked by over 500 earthquakes since Saturday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA)- an intense burst of seismic activity that’s fueling public anxiety as a viral doomsday prophecy for July 5, 2025, gains traction online.
Viral July 5 Japan Earthquake Prediction
The prediction comes from Ryo Tatsuki, a manga artist who claimed in her 1999 book ‘The Future I Saw’ that a catastrophic event would strike Japan on July 5. Her vision describes cities sinking, boiling seas, rising bubbles and a tsunami more powerful than the 2011 disaster. Owing to the eerie accuracy of her previous claims- including the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, the Covid-19 pandemic and the death of Princess Diana- Ryo Tatsuki has been dubbed by some as the “New Baba Vanga."
Earthquakes In Japan
Since her prophecy resurfaced online, it has been widely shared as the timing of the ongoing earthquake swarm added to public concern. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, most of the quakes have been mild, though two magnitude-5.1 tremors were felt strongly on Sunday and Tuesday. So far, no major damage has been reported but authorities have warned that a stronger quake is possible. Volcanologist Hisayoshi Yokose said a magnitude-6 event in the region cannot be ruled out. The Tokara Islands, which are sparsely populated and difficult to access, are home to around 700 residents spread across seven inhabited islands.
Despite rising online panic, officials urged the public to remain calm. Miyagi Governor Yoshihiro Murai said there is no scientific evidence to support the July 5 prediction and advised residents not to act on viral rumors.
Why Japan Is So Prone To Earthquakes?
Japan sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire"- a seismically volatile zone where four tectonic plates meet. The country experiences approximately 1,500 earthquakes per year, accounting for 18% of the world’s total. In January 2024, an earthquake killed over 400 people in the Noto Peninsula.
