New crest gates for Tungabhadra Dam by June 2026: Deputy CM

After the water level recedes to 1,613 ft in the Tungabhadra reservoir by December-end, the installation of new crest gates would be taken up and would be completed by June 2026, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar informed the Karnataka Legislative Council on Thursday.

Replying to a question by Basanagouda Badarli, he said that design and drawings of the crest gates had been verified by the Chief Engineer of Central Design Organisation, Vijayawada, and certified by Director, Gates Design (NW&S) of Directorate of CWC, New Delhi.

Subsequently the installation work of gate no. 19  worth ₹1.66 cr and work worth of ₹ 34.48 crore pertaining to changing of 32 gates had been entrusted to M/s Hardware Tolls and Machinery Project Ltd. Ahmedabad, Mr. Shivakumar said.

“At present out of gate no. 19 and remaining 32 crest gates, the fabrication of 14 crest gates has been completed, the dismantling process has begun from December 12. It has been planned to begin installation of the crest gates after the water level in the reservoir recedes to 1,613 ft by December-end and complete the work by June 2026,” he said.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that while Karnataka had released ₹10 crore for the work, Andhra Pradesh had released ₹20 crore and steps would be taken to release the remaining amount for the work.
