Influencer’s ‘brilliant’ hack leaves travellers disgusted and swearing off hotel coffee machines

The internet has seen its share of questionable travel tips. But this one struck a particularly sour note. A self-styled content creator, Tara Woodcox, is facing intense backlash after sharing what she described as a “brilliant” solution for travellers who run out of clean underwear mid-trip.

The clip, originally posted to Instagram, quickly went viral, and not in the way she may have hoped. In the now widely circulated video, Woodcox told followers: “Say you’re traveling and you didn’t pack enough underwear and you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, what am I going to wear tomorrow?’ Every room has a coffee pot thing in it. All you have to do is put your underwear where you put the coffee grounds, you close it, you press brew, and it puts scorching hot water through it.”She continued: "The hair dryer in the bathroom? You blow-dry those bad boys and you’ve got yourself a cleaner pair of underwear to wear. I did not realise how many people already knew this hack. I learned it years ago from a friend who was a flight attendant, and it’s brilliant.”The explanation sparked immediate disbelief. For starters, as several users pointed out, underwear would not physically fit into the coffee pod compartment the way she described.

Others assumed she meant pouring the hot water over the garment instead. Either way, the suggestion alone was enough to trigger collective disgust.Soon after the video spread, unverified claims began circulating online that Woodcox was facing a $1 million (£739,710) lawsuit tied to the stunt. However, there are currently no confirmed public court filings indicating that any such lawsuit has been filed. The rumor mill, though, did little to slow the outrage.

Across social media platforms, users expressed revulsion, and a renewed suspicion of hotel coffee makers. One commenter wrote: "New fear unlocked. I used to think the biggest risk with hotel coffee was that it tasted like cardboard, but now I have to wonder if it has a 'hint of Hanes.' This is why I always bring my own collapsible kettle now. Influencer culture has officially gone too far."Another added: "One person’s 'life hack' became everyone else’s trust issue; sometimes the real cost of going viral is realizing the internet never forgets."A third wrote: "I agree with the hotel suing her for washing her underwear in their coffee machine & posting about it too. Whatever happened to washing one's underwear in the bathroom then hanging it in the shower on a rack. People need to stop endangering public health & businesses for clicks on the internet."The comments reflect a broader frustration with influencer culture, where shock value often wins attention, even at the expense of common sense.Beyond the viral spectacle, the incident has reignited a long-standing concern among travellers: how clean are hotel rooms, really?Guests typically assume that sheets are changed, towels are replaced, and obvious surfaces are wiped down between stays. But high-touch items, television remotes, decorative pillows, curtains, and yes, coffee machines, may not receive the same level of routine sanitisation.Hotels operate as businesses, often balancing guest expectations with operational costs. While many properties maintain high cleanliness standards, not every item in a room is necessarily disinfected after each checkout.
