'New Journey to the West' spin-off titled 'Three Idiots in Kenya', gets ready for OTT debut

A chaotic trip five years in the making is finally seeing the light of day, and it's sealed with a kiss-between Kyuhyun and a giraffe. The long-awaited 'New Journey to the West' spin-off, titled 'Three Idiots in Kenya,' is set to premiere on Netflix, following the wild adventures of Lee Soo Geun, Eun Ji Won, and Kyuhyun.

The entire show spawned from a random prize draw back in 2019 during 'New Journey to the West 7,' where the trio won a voucher for a stay at the famous Giraffe Manor in Kenya, a prize that has since become legendary among fans, according to a report from MK Sports.

A promise finally fulfilled

For years, fans wondered if the legendary Kenya trip would ever happen. The prize, won through sheer luck, felt like a distant dream. Now, that dream is a reality, and it's being produced by the legendary Na Young Suk PD and his team.

This marks their first-ever variety show for Netflix, a huge move for the creators of hits like '2 Days & 1 Night' and 'Earth Arcade.' Co-director Kim Ye Seul admitted they chose this project for their Netflix debut because it's exactly "what fans have been waiting for.

Na PD's secret global pressure

Behind the scenes, the pressure was on. Na Young Suk confessed he was "a bit pressured" by the global release on Netflix. However, instead of changing his style, he decided to double down.

Na revealed his strategy: he believes Korea's "signature variety style might actually feel refreshing to international audiences." He's betting that the classic, chaotic formula that made his shows famous in Korea will conquer the world, hoping viewers will simply enjoy the ride.

A hilariously intense "kiss"

The show's teaser has already set the internet abuzz. In it, Na PD playfully asks, "Are you ready for a kiss with a giraffe?" before cutting to a shocking shot of Kyuhyun sharing a hilariously intense "kiss" with one of the majestic animals. It's a wild glimpse into the chaotic energy that awaits. The adventure begins when 'Three Idiots in Kenya' premieres on November 25.
