New radar to boost disaster preparedness in Tripura

Agartala: Tripura has taken a major step towards strengthening weather forecasting and disaster preparedness with the acquisition of a state-of-the-art X-Band Doppler Weather Radar. The radar, which will cover an area of around 100km, will enable real-time monitoring of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, cyclones, and other severe weather events. It is expected to be operational before the upcoming pre-monsoon season. At present, Tripura has 34 district-level rain gauges and 28 automated weather stations, with plans to add 14 more. From 2026, rainfall monitoring will also expand to block levels.

Over the past decade, the state’s meteorological centre has improved forecast accuracy to over 40%, moving beyond its earlier focus on aviation forecasts. The IMD aims to provide detailed forecasts at the Panchayat level, offering precise information that will particularly benefit farmers.During a ceremony attended by CM Manik Saha on Wednesday, IMD and Tripura govt formalised land lease agreements for the radar’s installation.
