In a significant political development, leading figures from the northeastern states have come together to launch a new regional platform, “One Northeast," aimed at uniting diverse voices from the region under a common political umbrella. The announcement was made at a press conference held at the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The initiative was jointly unveiled by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Tipra Motha chief and Tripura’s royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, and Assam’s Daniel Langthasa, marking what the leaders described as a “historic step" towards regional solidarity. The new front seeks to represent the collective aspirations, developmental needs, and cultural identity of the northeastern states on the national stage.
As part of the first phase, the leaders have constituted a nine-member special committee to chart the group’s future course within the next 45 days. The committee will deliberate on the structure, operational framework, and modalities of the proposed alliance, as well as its political positioning — specifically whether “One Northeast" will continue its association with the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) or choose an independent path.
In a joint statement released on November 4, the leaders said, “We, the leaders from different states of the Northeast, have come together today to make a collective and historic announcement—the coming together of various voices from our region to form a united, singular political entity that truly represents the aspirations of our people." The formation of the committee, they noted, marked “the first step toward building a common platform" that can amplify the region’s concerns in national policymaking.
Speaking at the event, Conrad Sangma underscored that the initiative was not intended as an act of confrontation. “We have not come here to fight against anyone. We have come together for the development of the Northeast," he said. Emphasising the need for a cohesive voice, he added, “Our goal is to protect the interests of the people of the Northeast and to build a strong indigenous voice at the national level."
