New York Giants face growing quarterback tension as Russell Wilson’s role comes under scrutiny

The New York Giants entered the offseason determined to reset their offense. After a disappointing 2024 campaign, head coach Brian Daboll signed veteran quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston to pair with rookie wideout Malik Nabers, who posted a historic 109-catch rookie year.

But as the 2025 season nears, cracks are already starting to show inside the locker room.

Personality clashes and leadership tests emerge in Giants camp

During a recent practice, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported on an animated exchange between Jameis Winston and Nabers. “The other day, Jameis Winston and Malik Nabers kind of going back and forth, getting very animated in conversation after practice. There are a lot of strong personalities. Very interesting to see if it works and it fits,” he noted.

For Nabers, who battled through injuries this offseason, Winston has largely been a positive presence. Speaking to CBS Sports, the wideout said, “He’s been great. Another great leader that’s been helping us in that locker room, helping us as a team…him and Russ have been doing a great job of just trying to help me be the best I can be.”Still, the fiery exchange underscores the fine balance Daboll must manage as he blends veterans with younger talent.

Russell Wilson’s starting job already faces pressure from within

Wilson is expected to start Week 1 against the Washington Commanders, but his hold on the job feels fragile. The Athletic’s Dan Duggan drew parallels to 2019, when Daniel Jones quickly replaced Eli Manning after a poor start. “If the Giants stumble against a killer early schedule, they won’t wait long to replace Wilson with Dart, who looked ready in the preseason,” Duggan explained, referencing rookie Jaxson Dart.

With matchups looming against heavyweights like the Cowboys and Chiefs, Wilson will need to deliver wins to maintain trust. Week 5 against the Saints could mark a natural transition point if Daboll decides the rookie is ready. Also Read: “Hottest female”: Ciara's ex-boyfriend calls her his hottest ex contrasting his past with her life now with NFL star Russell WilsonThe Giants may have the weapons, but without quarterback stability, Nabers’ breakout and the team’s playoff hopes could stall before they even begin.
