A celebratory video shared by the NYU Tandon School of Engineering has sparked a wave of online hate after showcasing students, many of South Asian descent, talking about their job offers from top tech firms like Google and Amazon.

The video, posted on NYU Tandon’s official Instagram account, features a light-hearted segment where a student walks around with a microphone during the graduation ceremony, asking fellow graduates about their post-college plans.

Several proudly shared that they had secured roles at some of the world’s biggest technology companies.

One woman revealed she had been hired as a software engineer at Google, while another said she would be joining Amazon in Seattle. Most of the students featured in the video appeared to be of Indian or South Asian background. Though the intention was to celebrate academic and professional success, the video quickly became a target of racist backlash.

Comments on Instagram were filled with hateful remarks attacking the students’ accents, ethnic backgrounds, and immigration status.

Some users accused them of “stealing" American jobs, while others called for them to be “sent back" to their home countries.

Several comments read, “All these immigrants making America great," “Send them back to their countries, us white people aren’t getting jobs because of these Indians." and, “They got scholarships from America while real Americans can’t get one."

Other users mocked their speech and physical appearance, with remarks like “Curry people cooking others" and “Sounds like a scam, this video."

Despite the hate, many users came to the students’ defence, applauding their hard work and success. “Really good for them. Say whatever you want. They worked for it," one comment said.

Another read, “I am very happy to see how people progress then white kids worry about who speak better English who have a heavy accent. I love you guys go ahead grab everything for your future."

“Shut out to them, may they prosper in life," another commentator noted.
