David Montgomery shares emotional farewell to Detroit (Imagn Images)
David Montgomery trade rumors became reality on March 2, ending a partnership that once felt central to Detroit’s rise. The Lions agreed to send the veteran running back to the Houston Texans for offensive lineman Juice Scruggs and draft picks, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The move came just days before the unofficial start of free agency, a reminder that roster building rarely waits for sentiment. For Detroit, it closes a three year chapter built on bruising runs and shared backfield glory. For Montgomery, it opens another door, this time in Houston, where opportunity and uncertainty meet at the same crossroads.

The decision did not materialize overnight. Montgomery’s workload dipped sharply last season, falling to a career low 158 carries.
Trade rumors followed. At the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine, general manager Brad Holmes signaled that nothing was settled.
"We’d love to have him. Kind of want to put last year in the rearview and just move forward," Holmes said at a Feb. 24 media availability. "But obviously, a player has to want to be at a certain place as well. So those conversations are still fluid and we’ll just kind of see how it goes."
Montgomery had publicly pushed back on speculation. After ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported he wanted out, he dismissed the claim without much detail.
Weeks earlier, ahead of Super Bowl 60, he told USA TODAY Sports, "I sure hope so," when asked if he was confident about returning. "I love the Lions, I love the team, I love the city of Detroit. I would love to be there, but it's in the air so I'm just ready and waiting for the ride.
"That ride now heads south.Originally drafted by the Chicago Bears in the third round in 2019, Montgomery carved out a steady career, averaging 3.9 yards per carry and scoring 26 touchdowns in four seasons.
His arrival in Detroit in 2023 sparked a revival. He rushed for over 1,000 yards and set a career high with 13 touchdowns while sharing carries with Jahmyr Gibbs. Together, they formed the fan favorite duo known as Sonic and Knuckles, a pairing that balanced power and speed. His farewell carried much emotion. "It's hard to find the right words for a goodbye like this," Montgomery wrote on Instagram. "Detroit has never just been a location to me – it's been a community."
He thanked fans for their belief and resilience, adding, "This isn't goodbye because something ended. It's goodbye because something grew. And growth sometimes calls us forward."Gibbs responded with a photo of the two walking apart, captioned only with a broken heart emoji. In Houston, Montgomery is expected to lead the depth chart entering 2026. The Texans gain a proven runner. The Lions gain flexibility and assets. And Montgomery leaves with gratitude, carrying, as he said, a piece of Detroit with him.
