Jerry Jones’ risky offseason strategy exposed after Maxx Crosby trade collapse

The Dallas Cowboys tried to trade for star pass rusher Maxx Crosby, offering a first and second round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders. However, the Baltimore Ravens secured the deal by offering two first-round picks. The move ends Dallas’ pursuit while Baltimore strengthens its defense with one of the league’s top edge rushers.

The NFL offseason rarely lacks drama, but the latest blockbuster trade talks revealed just how aggressive the Dallas Cowboys were willing to be. Owner Jerry Jones made a serious push to bring star pass rusher Maxx Crosby to Dallas.

The attempt showed the franchise’s urgency to rebuild its defense after parting ways with key talent in recent years. But the plan quickly collapsed when the Las Vegas Raiders chose a richer offer from the Baltimore Ravens instead. The Ravens stepped in with a bold proposal that Dallas was unwilling to match, ultimately sending Crosby to Baltimore and leaving the Cowboys watching another major defensive opportunity slip away.

Cowboys’ trade push falls short as Ravens seal blockbuster deal

Dallas entered the race determined to strengthen its pass rush after trading former defensive cornerstone Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers before the 2025 season. Adding Crosby would have helped fill that void and give the Cowboys a proven edge rusher capable of changing games.

The Cowboys reportedly offered a first and second round pick to land the five time Pro Bowler. It was a strong package, but not strong enough to win the bidding war.

According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Raiders had a better option on the table. Posting on X, Schefter wrote: "The Cowboys were willing to offer a first- and second-round pick to the Raiders for Maxx Crosby, but, logically and understandably, Las Vegas opted for the two first-round picks from the Ravens."Baltimore’s offer included the No. 14 overall selection in the 2026 draft along with another first round pick in 2027.

For a Raiders team entering another rebuilding phase, the decision was straightforward. Stockpiling high draft capital made far more sense than accepting a smaller return.Crosby’s departure also reflects growing frustration during his time in Las Vegas. The 28 year old star played under multiple head coaches during his tenure, from Jon Gruden to Pete Carroll, as the franchise struggled to find stability. Injuries and a disappointing 3–14 season last year further pushed the organization toward a reset. Now Crosby heads to Baltimore, where he joins a defense eager for a spark. The Ravens managed only 30 sacks last season, their lowest total in 15 years. For a team with championship ambitions, adding one of the league’s most relentless pass rushers could quickly reshape their defensive identity.Meanwhile in Dallas, Jones is left searching for answers again. The Cowboys were aggressive in pursuit of Crosby. They simply ran into a rival willing to pay more.
