Lamar Jackson’s future with the Baltimore Ravens is once again being talked about across the NFL. A key contract deadline passed this week, and the two sides did not agree on a new deal before the start of the new league year.

That moment has now sparked fresh trade rumors and questions about what happens next with the former MVP quarterback. The situation became even louder after a dramatic week in Baltimore. The Ravens first tried to pull off a huge trade for star pass rusher Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders, but the move collapsed before it could be completed. Soon after, the team quickly shifted plans and signed edge rusher Trey Hendrickson from the Cincinnati Bengals to a four year deal worth $112 million.

While fans were focused on those moves, another major storyline quietly developed. Baltimore did not finalize a contract extension with Lamar Jackson before the league year began. Jackson is still under contract through the 2027 season, but the missed deadline has fueled new debate about whether the star quarterback could eventually leave Baltimore.

Lamar Jackson contract situation raises questions for Baltimore Ravens after deadline passes

Jackson originally signed a five year, $260 million contract with Baltimore in 2023 after a tense negotiation period.

At the time, the deal made him one of the highest paid players in the NFL. But the latest round of talks about another extension did not reach the finish line before the league calendar reset this week. NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk explained why that matters for the long term situation. He wrote, “With the preferred window for a new deal slammed shut and with players like Isaiah Likely, Tyler Linderbaum and Patrick Ricard gone for new teams, the Ravens’ urgency may seem to be diminished.

But here’s the reality. With Jackson representing himself, he’ll eventually return his focus to football.”Florio also pointed out that if the team and Jackson do not reach another agreement before the next league year, the timeline toward free agency will start getting real. Jackson’s current contract includes a no-tag clause, which means the Ravens cannot use the franchise tag to keep him if he reaches the open market. The situation becomes even more important because Baltimore is entering a new era. Longtime head coach John Harbaugh was fired after the team finished the 2025 season with an 8–9 record and missed the playoffs. The franchise then hired Jesse Minter as its new head coach heading into the 2026 season. Baltimore has been strong in the regular season since Jackson entered the league in 2018. However, playoff success has been harder to find.

The Ravens have struggled to make deep postseason runs despite having one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in football.Because of that, the upcoming seasons could shape everything. If the Ravens bounce back under Minter and return to playoff form, a new deal for Jackson could happen quickly. But if the team struggles again, trade rumors and long term questions about the franchise quarterback may only grow louder.
