Solid waste clearance in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has received a major blow on Thursday (November 6, 2025) due to an order by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to stop waste dumping at the processing facility at Jawahar Nagar.

Hearing a petition against the pollution caused by the dump yard, the apex green court has issued interim orders to stall the transfer of solid waste to Jawahar Nagar, pending a report by IIT Bombay about processing of legacy waste. However, the bench has permitted the processing of existing waste at the facility.

Final hearing on November 11

The hearing was on October 28, but the order was received only on November 6, putting the GHMC authorities to face an insurmountable problem for the next four days until the final hearing on November 11.

9,684 MT solid waste a day

Jawahar Nagar processing facility receives an average of 9,684 metric tonnes of solid waste every day. Of this, 8,500-odd tonnes goes from GHMC alone, with the surrounding 14 urban local bodies contributing 1,100-1,200 MT of waste.

With the latest NGT order, the city and surrounding municipalities stare at the possibility of over 38,000 tonnes of waste remaining uncollected. Despite multiple meetings, the authorities are unable to cut this Gordian Knot, sources informed.

“The ULBs can find some open place to store the waste till final order, but GHMC cannot do it. All doors are shut for us,” an official shared under the condition of anonymity.

However, the petitioners claim this as a historic order which will lead to resolution of the issue they were forced to endure for decades.
