The Ministry of Road Transport has directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and highway construction companies to launch their own YouTube channels and upload regular videos documenting project progress. The move aims to enhance transparency, public participation, and accountability in highway construction.
According to a report by The Times Of India, Road Transport Secretary V Umashankar, speaking at a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event on Tuesday, said that NHAI has been asked to post videos of projects at various stages of development.
“There have been instances when we get a lot of information and updates about projects and the problems being faced from videos uploaded by independent YouTubers. Some comments also give insight into issues…We are working on to make the uploading of videos as a part of project contract document," he said.
Ministry officials noted that highway builders already submit drone-shot videos of projects to highway authorities during construction. Hence, making these videos available for public viewing will not pose a challenge. The initiative is expected to allow citizens to track progress, provide feedback, and hold authorities accountable.
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari also emphasised the importance of quality and transparency. He said instructions have been issued to install hoardings with QR codes at highways, allowing commuters to view details of contractors and responsible officials, including their names and contact information.
“If people are paying toll, they deserve international-quality roads. Weather or poor bitumen cannot be excuses. If the surface is not comfortable, fix it — cost may increase but comfort is non-negotiable," he added.
Gadkari further stressed that complaints on social media should be taken seriously. He urged officers to adopt a sense of ownership and ensure roads are maintained to high standards.
The Union Minister highlighted that regular performance audits would help identify design or maintenance issues, increase transparency, and reward quality work. “When audits are regular, transparency increases, and excuses decrease. That’s how we should work."
