NHL analyst suggests bold two-step contract strategy for Connor McDavid under new CBA rules

That season, the NHL salary cap is projected at $104 million.Step two would involve McDavid signing a three-year extension in January 2027, when the cap is expected to climb to $113 million. This timing would align his earnings with the cap’s upward trajectory. And give the Oilers more breathing room to strengthen the roster in the short term.

The plan takes advantage of the CBA rule that allows a player’s salary to reach up to 20% of the league cap. Based on future projections, McDavid’s contract could approach the unprecedented figure of $20 million annually.

If executed, this two-phase plan could see McDavid earn approximately $65.6 million over four seasons, averaging $16.4 million annually. That would surpass Auston Matthews’ league-leading $13.25 million AAV.
