The Columbus Blue Jackets have dealt a major blow as defenseman Damon Severson will miss the remainder of the NHL season after undergoing shoulder surgery recently due to an upper-body injury.

This was confirmed by the team on Friday, sharing the status of the Blue Jackets player. As per reports, Severson suffered the injury during a game against the Montreal Canadiens on March 26, when he absorbed a check from forward Zachary Bolduc in the third period of the Blue Jackets’ 2–1 loss. The 31-year-old defenseman later underwent surgery on Thursday, ruling him out for the rest of the season. According to the Daily Faceoff, Severson has been out since the Blue Jackets’ March 26 contest against the Montreal Canadiens, when Zachary Bolduc collided with the Columbus defender.

Following the incident, he left the game and did not return.

Columbus Blue Jackets Damon Severson will miss the remainder of the NHL season after he underwent shoulder surgery recently due to an injury that he sustained during a game against the Montreal Canadiens on March 26, where he absorbed a check from forward Zachary Bolduc in the third period of the Blue Jackets’ 2–1 loss. The 31-year-old defenseman later underwent surgery on Thursday, which will keep him out for the rest of the season.

The injury comes at a difficult time for Columbus, as Severson had been one of the team’s most consistent performers this season. He recorded 32 points, including eight goals and 24 assists, and posted a team-best plus-18 rating in 71 games. Besides, according to the NHL, he has 81 goals and 267 assists for 348 points so far, averaging 21:00 of ice time in 855 regular-season games with the Blue Jackets and New Jersey Devils.Severason also appeared in 16 Stanley Cup Playoff games, recording 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points, averaging 18:45 of ice time. The defenseman has been a marquee player of the Blue Jackets’ defensive unit, and his absence is expected to impact the team as they continue their push towards the playoffs this season. Before being ruled out for the season, he was initially listed as week-to-week with an upper-body injury; however, further evaluation determined that surgery was required. Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets are 38-26-12 with 88 points in 76 games. They are currently sitting in the fourth place in the Metropolitan Division and tied with the Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings in the Eastern Conference Wildcard race.
