The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed centre David Kampf on suspension without pay, marking a notable escalation in his standing with the organization. Reports have confirmed that the Maple Leafs have suspended the forward without pay since November 2 for leaving their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.According to NHL insider Chris Johnston of TSN, Kampf has been away from the team and is “thinking about his future and possible next steps.” Johnston reported that a potential resolution “could be coming by this weekend,” with one possibility being that Kampf may rejoin the Leafs’ AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.Reports suggest that Kampf is now in the third year of his four-year, $9.6 million contract with a $2.4 million cap hit, and he has only participated in four AHL games this season, where he has only one assist credited before he left the team.

TSN insider Chris Johnston spoke about David Kampf on Thursday’s broadcast of Insider Trading after the Maple Leafs had suspended the forward without pay since November 2 for leaving their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. As per reports, David Kampf did not make the NHL roster out of training camp this season. It was the first time since 2017 that he missed opening night. As of his association with the Maple Leafs, he played four seasons with Chicago before joining Toronto in 2021.
During his time with the team, he has managed to score five goals and 13 points in 59 games last season, and also appeared in one playoff game. Meanwhile, NHL insider Chris Johnston reported that Kampf has been away, thinking about his future and possible next steps. He also reported that David Kampf might return to the Marlies this weekend, and a resolution could come soon.

Updating about the situation, Chris Johnston said, "I’m told that could be coming to a resolution by this weekend.
Could even see Kampf rejoin the Marlies. We’ll see what happens there.”In addition to this, Darren Dreger also noted that other teams are not showing much interest in Kampf at the moment. He said it is early in the season, and a future NHL chance is still possible."It's too early in the season, not saying that he can't find an NHL home outside of Toronto in the future, maybe near future." Dreger further added, "All it takes is a depth injury and a team that has some cap space, and away you go. That's just not the reality for the Leafs right now."
