As Toronto Maple Leafs’ Marc Savard was relieved of his duties by the Maple Leafs on Monday evening, after the team's power play got off to a disastrous start, speculations are doing the rounds about whether the team is planning to fire Craig Berube and Brad Treliving next from the club.As per reports, Savard was in charge of the Maple Leafs' power play, which has been dreadful to begin the year. He took the reins of Toronto’s power-play unit, and the stats paint a pretty clear picture of his leadership and responsibilities.Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs are sitting at the bottom of the NHL when it comes to power-play efficiency, managing to convert only 13.3 percent of their opportunities. The puck movement has been lackluster, the execution has been shaky, and opponents have had an easy time shutting down Toronto’s offense, which is why the frustration has trickled down to the players, the fans, and the entire organization.
But what about the head coach Berube and General Manager Treliving's position? Are they at stake? Let's find out below.
Are Craig Berube and Brad Treliving on the verge of getting fired from the Toronto Maple Leafs?
The Toronto Maple Leafs made a coaching change on Monday, discharging assistant coach Marc Savard of his duties after the team’s power play struggled badly at the start of the season. Following his exit, fans and NHL analysts are wondering if any action will be taken against the head coach, Craig Berube, and GM Treliving for the club's condition in the Eastern Conference this season.
However, it has come to light that despite the tough decision, the club is not expected to make any further changes to its management or coaching leadership. This has been confirmed by NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman.According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Toronto general manager Brad Treliving and head coach Craig Berube will remain in their posts despite a disastrous start to the season, where they find themselves dead last in the Eastern Conference.
Was firing Marc Savard the right move for struggling Maple Leafs?
Reports indicate that Savard was in charge of the Maple Leafs' power play, which has been dreadful to begin the year. Once in the upper echelon of the NHL, Toronto has hit a new rock bottom with a 13.3 percent success rate ( with 12 goals on 90 opportunities) on the power play. This sharp decline in performance has made changes unavoidable amongst the coaching staff and the management.Earlier, Toronto had assistant coaches Mike Van Ryn and Derek Lalonde.
Van Ryn was brought in July 2023, a few months after the Maple Leafs hired Berube, while Lalonde was recruited this past summer after associate coach Lane Lambert departed the club.Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs will play against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday. They will be next seen in action on the 27th and will play back-to-back against the Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings, before facing the New Jersey Devils on December 30, 2025.Also read: Former Senator Josh Norris faces Ottawa for first time as Sabres visit Canadian Tire Centre | NHL News - The Times of India
