The ‘Don’ really does get the last laugh.

The Dallas Mavericks have officially parted ways with general manager and president of basketball operations Nico Harrison on Tuesday.

The decision comes just nine months after his controversial decision to trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, a move that has since aged disastrously for Dallas.

“Dallas Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont today announced that the organization has relieved Nico Harrison of his role as general manager and president of basketball operations, effective immediately," read an official team statement on Tuesday.

Adding to the hilarity of the situation, Dumont was spotted chatting with a fan wearing a gold Lakers Dončić jersey during Monday’s 116-114 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, just 24 hours before Harrison’s dismissal was announced.

The Mavericks have appointed Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi as co-interim general managers while launching a comprehensive search for a permanent replacement.

The Trade That Changed Everything

Harrison’s tenure came undone after the blockbuster deal that sent five-time All-NBA selection Doncic — the face of the franchise and one of basketball’s brightest stars — to the Lakers.

At the time, Harrison defended the trade by citing concerns about Dončić’s conditioning and long-term durability.

“I did know that Luka was important to the fanbase. I didn’t quite know it to what level," Harrison said back in March, comments that only deepened the backlash from fans and pundits alike.

Fallout and Frustration in Dallas

The move has since proven disastrous so far. The Mavericks, now 3-8, have stumbled badly out of the gate this season. Their headline acquisition, Anthony Davis, missed six weeks with an adductor injury and is now sidelined again with a calf strain.

Meanwhile, Doncic has been nothing short of sensational in Los Angeles. The 26-year-old Slovenian is averaging over 37 points and nine assists per game, leading the Lakers to an 8-3 record and positioning them as early contenders in the Western Conference.

For now, Dončić is thriving in purple and gold, the Lakers are surging, and Dallas is left to pick up the pieces.
