Nikon has released firmware version 3.00 for its full-frame Z f mirrorless camera, introducing a Film Grain feature that emulates the aesthetic of traditional film photography through digital image processing. The Film Grain feature allows photographers and videographers to add customizable grainy effects to their images, with three grain size options and six intensity levels. The feature generates random grain patterns with each shot, creating unique film-like results without repetition. Users can combine Film Grain with Nikon's Imaging Recipes and Picture Controls for enhanced creative possibilities. The update significantly improves manual focusing capabilities with an "Only during zoom" option for Focus peaking, which displays peaking indicators exclusively when magnifying the view.
This allows users to verify both focus and composition without visual distractions. A new "Maximum aperture Lv" setting further assists in determining focus peaks during manual operation. Additional enhancements include new grid type options optimized for social media content, with 4:3 ratios for still images and 9:16 for videos. The firmware enables seamless live streaming to HDMI devices and improves the automatic monitor display switch to prevent accidental viewfinder activation when the vari-angle screen is deployed.
Other refinements include electronic shutter sounds for high-speed capture and pixel shift shooting, portrait orientation recording for videos, and streamlined Imaging Recipes registration through Nikon Imaging Cloud. The firmware is available for download at nikon.co.in.
