The Election Commission on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) rejected the nomination filed by All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) Kerala State convener P.V. Anvar for the June 19 Assembly byelection in Nilambur.
The Election Commission rejected his nomination as AITC candidate on technical grounds during scrutiny. But the commission has accepted his second set of nomination as an independent candidate. Mr. Anvar will contest the election as an independent.
Mr. Anvar had apparently anticipated his candidacy as an independent when he indicated on Sunday that it would be difficult to contest in the banner of the AITC as that party had no registration in Kerala.
On Tuesday, soon after the rejection of his AITC nomination, Mr. Anvar said he was waiting for a final call by the Election Commission. He said the commission had sought clarification from the AITC national leadership.
According to official sources, Mr. Anvar’s AITC nomination was rejected due to incomplete documentation.
However, sources close to Mr. Anvar said that he had intentionally submitted the nomination in a manner that would pave the way for him to contest as an independent candidate.
