Aizawl: Mizoram has reported at least nine deaths due to dengue since 2022, with one fatality occurring this year, according to officials from the State Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (SVBDCP).During a meeting with leaders of 87 local councils within the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), officials revealed that 27,950 samples suspected of dengue infection have been tested. Of these, 1,846 individuals were confirmed infected, and one person has died from the virus between Jan 1 and Nov 10 this year. The meeting, organised by the SVBDCP, National Health Mission, and the state health & family welfare department, aimed to raise awareness among local council leaders about the dengue situation, particularly in the AMC area.Officials highlighted that 975 of the infected individuals (52.82%) are from the AMC region. In 2022, five people died from dengue among 1,868 infected, while two out of 2,060 infected individuals died in 2023. One death was reported in both 2024 and this year.Dengue was first detected in Mizoram in 2013, initially affecting only a few individuals. The number of infections remained below a hundred until it surged to over 1,800 in 2022, marking the first time the state recorded fatalities from the virus.
