Many a time, we talk about ‘an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object’ in sport. This was truly one of those nights.

In a night that reminded everyone why football is ‘the beautiful game’, Paris Saint-Germain beat Bayern Munich 5-4 in the first leg of a Champions League semi-final that delivered nine goals — yes, NINE.

Fall back and defend? Pfft, we’ll leave that to Arsenal and Atletico, said both teams.

In a season where structure and set-pieces have often dominated, last night was all about pure, relentless attacking football.

And it’s now the highest-scoring semi-final in Champions League history, and one that will be talked about for a while.

Goals, Goals, and More Goals

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembele led the charge for PSG, scoring twice each, with Joao Neves adding the fifth.

Bayern had four different scorers: Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Dayot Upamecano and Luis Diaz.

There were five goals in the first half, four more after the break, and barely a moment to catch your breath.

A Rare Kind of Game

I don’t think anyone needs convincing that the masterclass on display wasn’t just entertaining, but historic too.

It marked the first time in a major European semi-final that both teams scored at least four goals. Only once before has a Champions League knockout match produced a similar scoreline, when Chelsea drew 4-4 with Liverpool in 2009.

But, it wasn’t unexpected. Well, nine goals in a single leg was — but both teams came into the contest as the most prolific attacking sides.

In fact, PSG have now scored 43 goals in this Champions League campaign, with Bayern on 42. It’s the first time two teams have crossed the 40-goal mark in the same season. Sheer goal-scoring insanity.

Vincent Kompany’s Bayern arrived in Paris in scoring form, having racked up 167 goals this season, with Kane leading the line.

PSG, though, matched that intensity from the first whistle and found just enough edge to take a one-goal lead into the second leg.

All To Play For In Munich

If you think the tie is settled, think twice… or rather nine times.

PSG take the narrowest of advantages to the Allianz Arena, but Bayern will back themselves at home to turn things around.

With PSG are chasing back-to-back Champions League titles, and Bayern aiming for their first final since 2020, one can rest assured that these two will bring it.

Oh, and the winner will face either Arsenal or Atletico Madrid in the final in Budapest on May 30.  Godspeed to those other two. (and to us too, as we brace ourselves for a possible display of the anti-thesis of what we witnessed last night).
