A nine-year-old boy, identified as Nashid, drowned in the Kakkad river on Wednesday evening while fishing near his home.

The Class 4 student was reportedly swept away by strong currents as he was fishing with a friend.

The incident occured shortly after Nashid returned home from school. His house is situated close to the riverbank where the accident took place. According to locals, the two boys ventured into the river for fishing when Nashid accidently slipped and fell into the swollen river.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel, along with local residents, launched a search operation and managed to pull the boy out of water. However, despite being rushed to the hospital, he could not be saved.

The area has been experiencing continuous rainfall, prompting the authorities to declare a holiday for schools in Kakkad and nearby regions.
