The JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (JSS AHER) has been ranked 21st in the country among all universities while the University of Mysore (UoM) has secured the 71st position as per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), announced by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

The NIRF ranking for 2025 was announced on Thursday, and while JSS AHER has improved its ranking from 24th in the country in 2024, the University of Mysore has slipped 20 places as it was ranked 51st in the country last year.

JSS AHER has secured an overall ranking of 38th in the country among all colleges, universities, and research institutions.

However, among a separate ranking for State Public Universities, UoM is in the 20th position as opposed to its 19th rank in 2024. This drop in position by just one rank is the only source of consolation for the university beleaguered by shortage of staff and paucity of funds since the last few years.

The rankings are based on various parameters, including Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR); Research and Professional Practice (RP); Graduation Outcome (GO); Outreach and Inclusivity (OI); and Peer Perception (PP).

The JSS Medical College, an affiliate of JSS AHER, is ranked 37th in the country among medical colleges, while the JSS College of Pharmacy in Ooty has been ranked 4th in the country with its counterpart in Mysuru being ranked 7th. The JSS Dental College made the top 10, as it was ranked 10th among dental colleges in the country under NIRF. In the Sustainable Development Goals ranking, JSS AHER is placed in the band of institutions ranked between 11 and 50.

Among engineering colleges, the National Institute of Engineering figures in the band of institutions ranked between 151 and 200, while the JSS Science and Technology University in Mysuru and the PES College of Engineering in Mandya are among the band of institutions ranked between 201 to 300, as per NIRF.

Among the Open Universities, the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) is ranked 2nd in the country out of 15 institutions which participated in the NIRF exercise.

Meanwhile, H. Basavana Gowdappa, Vice-Chancellor, JSS AHER, said that they were among the first few universities in the country to introduce NEP 2020, and added that in this context, the institute has launched six B.Sc courses in the faculty of life sciences. The students who have graduated have received good placements, contributing to the reputation of the university, he stated.

But what has contributed significantly to JSS AHER leapfrogging to the level of top-ranked universities is the emphasis on research, said Mr. Basavana Gowdappa. The JSS AHER has established itself as a leading centre of innovation and scholarship, and over the past 5 years, has produced more than 15,000 research papers, he added.

This is in addition to securing over 250 patents and strengthening its intellectual property rights portfolio, said the Vice-Chancellor.
