Nitish Kumar’s bid for the Rajya Sabha has triggered intense speculation in Bihar over who could succeed him as Chief Minister. The Janata Dal (United) supremo, who has dominated the state’s political landscape for more than two decades, filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections on Thursday—paving the way for his exit from the top post just four months after being sworn in for a record 10th term as chief minister.

With the JDU chief expected to shift to national politics in Delhi, attention has quickly turned to the BJP’s internal deliberations.

Several names are being discussed within the party, but Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary is widely seen as the frontrunner to take over the reins in Bihar.
