HYDERABAD: Sheikh Riyaz, the prime accused in the murder of police constable Pramod in Telangana’s Nizamabad district, was shot dead by police on Monday after he allegedly tried to escape from custody while undergoing treatment at a government hospital.According to police sources, Riyaz snatched a firearm from a security personnel and opened fire inside the hospital premises, injuring a constable. In response, another officer on duty fired at Riyaz, leading to his death.Riyaz had been absconding since the killing of constable Pramod. On Sunday, he was nabbed following an altercation with a passerby, identified as Asif. The scuffle, which took place in public, initially appeared to be a civilian dispute.

However, police found that one of the men involved was Riyaz, the murder suspect. During the incident, Riyaz reportedly attacked Asif with a knife before being overpowered by police.

On Monday morning, Riyaz allegedly grabbed a weapon from a police constable assigned to his security and fired at officers present. One constable sustained injuries. Another officer immediately opened fire in retaliation, fatally shooting Riyaz.

Nizamabad police commissioner Sai Chaitanya visited the hospital following the incident. An internal inquiry is expected to ascertain the full sequence of events, including the security breach that led to Riyaz accessing a firearm while in custody.
