‘If NewJeans appeals, they will lose again’

K-pop group NJZ plans to appeal a court ruling upholding their contracts with management agency ADOR. Legal experts, however, express strong doubts about the appeal's success, predicting further financial losses and a slim chance of overturning the verdict without new evidence. The group faces significant legal fees for this potential move.

Recently, NJZ and their management agency’s case has been making headlines after the final verdict was served. The court had ruled that the group’s contracts with the company were valid and that nothing had occurred that could be used as enough reasoning for the termination of the contracts.

Now, many netizens and legal experts have weighed in on their opinions about what the future holds for them.

NJZ say they will appeal against the final verdict

Last week, after the final verdict was served and the statement was made public, NJZ released its own statement about the matter. Citing that it would be ‘impossible’ to return to their management agency ADOR, they shared that they will be filing an appeal against the verdict. Legally, you are supposed to file for an appeal against a verdict within a week of its official notice.

Legal experts weigh in on the possible future of the case and the group

As per reports shared by Allkpop, many experts have shared their disdain over the possible legal move that the group is planning to pull. Many shared that the group, as well as the company’s former CEO, Min Hee Jin, is already incurring debts, and the appeal would bring them even more loss. On November 8, a popular legal online channel titled ‘Kang & Park Law Firm’ released a detailed video about the matter, and why they think that the popular girl group has no future and fans may not be able to see them in the coming year.

Attorneys Kang Ho Seok and Park Gun Ho featured in the video, and shared that the possibilty of NJZ continuing as a group, especially if they file an appeal with the court, is thinning down to none. They shared that, “However, the first trial court reached its conclusion after carefully interpreting the law to determine whether NewJeans had valid grounds to terminate their contract. The court found none. The ruling clearly stated that ADOR’s management was not in a state of collapse.

Contracts are not to be taken lightly. If NewJeans appeals, they will lose again, one hundred percent. There is no chance of overturning the ruling without decisive new evidence, and that is highly unlikely.

The attorneys also added that while they truly believe that it won’t be a beneficial move and that the girl group’s legal representation may move forward with it. They cited that there are two weeks given in total, which means that there is still time to see where the course of the case and the future of the five girls goes. They further revealed that another reason why it may not be a good idea to move forward with the appeal is the fee that they’ll have to pay the firm. They roughly estimated that around 500 million KRW may need to be spent on lawyers for the possible appeal. At the time of writing, there have been no appeals made by the group and their legal representatives in relation to the contract case verdict.
