RAIPUR: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 61 new MD/MS (Postgraduate) seats across several government medical colleges in Chhattisgarh, marking a significant boost to the state's medical education sector.
With this approval, the total number of government PG seats in the state has increased from 316 to 377, while private medical colleges currently offer 186 PG seats. According to Commissioner of Medical Education Shikha Rajput Tiwari, the seat distribution is as follows: Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS), Bilaspur – 21 seats; Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Memorial Medical College, Rajnandgaon – 7 seats; Baliram Kashyap Memorial Medical College, Jagdalpur – 8 seats; Lakhiram Agrawal Memorial Medical College, Raigarh – 12 seats; and Bisahudas Mahant Memorial Medical College, Korba – 13 seats.
Health and Medical Education Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal welcomed the approval, calling it a historic step in the field of medical education for Chhattisgarh. “The approval of new PG seats will increase the number of specialist doctors in the state, ensuring better healthcare services for the public. This is a major step towards strengthening health services under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai,” Jaiswal said. The state government expects that the addition of these seats will not only enhance opportunities for medical education but also make quality specialist care more accessible in government hospitals across Chhattisgarh.
