In a significant intervention at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting held on June 24 in Beijing, India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval underscored the country’s deep historical and cultural ties with each SCO member state.

India expressed serious concerns over the persistent threats posed by terrorist groups designated by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), including Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Al Qaeda, and ISIS, along with their affiliates.

The NSA’s address came in the wake of the horrific terror attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack, orchestrated by the Lashkar-E-Taiba (LeT), resulted in the deaths of 26 Indian and Nepalese nationals and left several others injured. The terrorists segregated the victims based on their religion. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor to dismantle terror infrastructure and deter potential terrorists from infiltrating across the border. The NSA emphasised that India’s response was measured and non-escalatory.

WHAT NSA SOUGHT

During the SCO meeting, the NSA called for the abandonment of double standards in combating terrorism and urged decisive actions against UN-proscribed terrorists and entities, such as LeT and JeM, along with their proxies. He stressed the importance of dismantling their terror ecosystems to ensure global security.

Reiterating that any act of terrorism, including cross-border terrorism, is a crime against humanity, India called on SCO members to hold accountable the perpetrators, organisers, financiers, and sponsors of such acts and to assist in bringing them to justice.

The NSA sought the support of the Heads of Delegations for several key Indian proposals, including:

  • An algorithm for joint actions to counter the challenges posed by international terrorist organisations, including Al Qaeda and its affiliates.
  • Joint measures to counter radicalisation leading to terrorism, separatism, and extremism.
  • A joint information operation to combat extremist ideologies.

WHY THESE EFFORTS MATTER

Through these initiatives, India aims to strengthen collective efforts within the SCO to address and mitigate the threats of terrorism and ensure regional stability and security.

News18 earlier reported that while both India and Pakistan will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), New Delhi will not hold any bilateral meeting as part of the tactical disengagement from Pakistan in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam attack, said intelligence sources.
