Being labelled the title favourite sounds great… until the pressure kicks in.

For George Russell, that expectation has been very real this season at Mercedes. But just as he looked ready to lead the charge, a mix of misfortune and momentum shifts had flipped the narrative.

Enter Kimi Antonelli… and suddenly, the spotlight isn’t where many expected it to be.

Antonelli’s Meteoric Rise

The 19-year-old has been nothing short of sensational. His win at the Japanese Grand Prix sealed back-to-back victories and catapulted him to the top of the standings.

In doing so, Antonelli became the first Italian since Alberto Ascari (1953) to win consecutive races and the first teenager ever to lead the drivers’ championship.

With Antonelli surging, questions naturally followed: Is Russell feeling the heat?

Short answer: not really.

“He’s a fantastic driver. I saw it last year. He showed lots of signs of great speed," Russell told the BBC’s Chequered Flag. “But it’s very early days… I’m sure it’s going to be very close."

Russell even admitted he expected this step up.

“It’s quite normal coming into his second year to take a step… but it’s a very different dynamic this year when you’re kind of in a two-horse race."

No Mind Games, No Drama

Some have suggested there could be mind games brewing between the teammates. But Russell isn’t buying into that narrative.

“That’s not how I go about my business," he told CNN. “If I look at somebody like Lewis Hamilton… he’s always won in a fair and dignified way."

“I know what I stand for… I don’t need to win through any of those means."

As things stand, Antonelli leads the championship while Russell trails by nine points. And with the Miami Grand Prix up next, with a plethora of rules changes coming into effect, the gap is far from unbridgeable.
