To improve safety on Hyderabad’s Nehru Outer Ring Road (ORR), a month-long public awareness campaign titled ‘No Parking on ORR’has been launched. The initiative aims to turn the 158-kilometre expressway into a zero-fatality corridor by educating motorists about the dangers of stopping or parking on the high-speed route.

The campaign, supported by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), is a joint effort by IRB Golconda Expressway Pvt. Ltd., in collaboration with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), Traffic Police, and Hyderabad Growth Corridor Ltd. (HGCL), to promote safe and responsible driving.

Designed for uninterrupted travel at speeds of up to 120 km/hour, the ORR has recently witnessed an increase in serious accidents involving vehicles parked on shoulders or emergency lanes. Safety officials have identified such illegal parking, often involving heavy trucks and lorries without hazard lights or reflective warnings as a major cause of avoidable collisions.

“The Outer Ring Road is meant for smooth, high-speed transit, not for stopping or parking,” said HGCL chief general manager at the launch event. “Many of the accidents we investigate stem from illegally parked vehicles. Through this campaign, we want every motorist to understand that even a momentary stop on the ORR can cost lives. Safety must always take precedence over convenience.”

Echoing this sentiment, IRB Golconda Expressway director said, “The ORR symbolises Hyderabad’s growth and connectivity. However, misuse of the corridor through illegal parking has made it a potential danger zone.”

As part of the campaign, the organisers will hold awareness drives, digital outreach programmes and interactive sessions with commercial drivers, logistics operators and private motorists. Fuel stations near key ORR intersections will display ‘No Parking on ORR’ and ‘No Fuel on ORR’ messages as reminders for drivers before they enter the expressway. The initiative will also reinforce the ban on two- and three-wheelers on the corridor.
