NOIDA: Commuters travelling through Gaur Chowk, also known as Char Murti, are set to get relief as the roof (slab) of the under-construction underpass at the intersection nears completion.
The officials said that the slab will soon be opened for vehicular movement, allowing vehicles to drive directly over it.With the roundabout dismantled, vehicles travelling from Noida and Parthala Bridge towards Gaur Chowk and Ek Murti will now move straight, without detours. Similarly, those coming from Ek Murti heading to Noida via Gaur Chowk will also have a straight path. However, for commuters on the Taj Highway running parallel to the underpass, the route will involve a left turn followed by a U-turn to complete the journey.
Greater Noida Authority CEO NG Ravi Kumar inspected the construction site and issued instructions to expedite the remaining work. “The newly constructed slab at the rotary will be opened soon for the public so that commuters could get some relief,” Kumar said. Meanwhile, it will take six months to complete the underpass project. The 700-metre underpass, being developed parallel to the Taj Highway at Gaur Chowk, is part of a long-term strategy to streamline traffic in one of the most congested corridors of Greater Noida West.
The six-lane project runs parallel to the 60-metre road and aims to directly connect Greater Noida with Gaur City and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME).The idea is to allow vehicles to bypass Gaur Chowk, significantly reducing traffic load at the intersection. Of the total length, 350 metres lie on either side of the chowk, and the project is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 92 crore.Gaur Chowk, a central traffic junction in Greater Noida West, currently serves a residential population of over five lakh.
The area has seen mounting traffic pressure from multiple routes, including Noida, Surajpur, Crossings Republik, and the DME.The inauguration of Parthala flyover in 2023 helped reduce bottlenecks at Parthala Chowk, but it shifted the congestion problem toward Gaur Chowk. In an earlier attempt to manage the situation, traffic police blocked two arms of the Gaur Chowk rotary and created U-turns approximately 500 metres from the intersection. While these interim measures offered temporary respite, the increase in vehicular volume rendered them insufficient in the long run.As part of the redevelopment plan, the existing rotary at Gaur Chowk will be reduced in size, and the iconic Char Murti (four statues) will be reinstalled at the centre of the intersection once the underpass project is complete.
