Norwegian forward Andreas Schjelderup, who currently plays for Benfica, will plead guilty in Denmark later this month after admitting to sharing a video of a sexual nature involving minors, Norway’s football association confirmed on Monday.
According to Danish media, Schjelderup is accused of sharing a 27-second clip on social media while he was still playing for Danish club FC Nordsjaelland two years ago.
Lisa Klaveness, president of the Norwegian Football Association, acknowledged the severity of the matter, saying:
“Schjelderup made a mistake, a very serious mistake, for which he is criminally liable."
The 21-year-old forward will appear before a Danish court on November 19, where he is expected to plead guilty.
Schjelderup addressed the controversy on Instagram over the weekend, admitting to what he described as a “stupid mistake" made in his teens.
“I received a short video and forwarded it to a friend a few seconds later, without thinking clearly," he wrote. “I only saw the first few seconds and not what the video developed into. My friend immediately told me it was illegal, so I deleted it straight away."
Under Danish law, sharing sexual images involving minors is punishable by a fine or up to two years in prison. However, local media report that Schjelderup is likely to receive a suspended sentence.
Despite the ongoing legal issue, the forward has been included in Norway’s squad for Thursday’s World Cup qualifier against Estonia, a crucial match that could seal the country’s first World Cup berth in 28 years.
Klaveness said the federation believes the matter is best handled through legal channels, adding:
“We are firmly convinced that there is no need to impose an additional sporting penalty."
