The revenue officials issued notices to the encroachers of land providing access to more than four-century-old temple at Vettuvakkottai, Thiruvonam taluk, where the Scheduled Caste people used to pray to the presiding deity, Minnadiyan Kaliyammal.
The Scheduled Caste people residing in Vettuvakkottai, Puduviduthi, Peththitheru, Moonumangkollai, Sevvaipatti, Oooranipuram, Chathirapatti and other habitats around Vettuvakkottai used to pray at the temple. However, they found it difficult to access the temple as the land surrounding the temple, said to be in the name of the temple’s presiding deity, had been encroached.
They submitted a memorandum to the officials recently pleading for easy access to the temple by clearing the encroachments.
A team of officials visited the spot and measured it. After confirming that the land had been encroached, the officials issued notices to the encroachers that the encroachments would be evicted once the current cultivation season ended, sources added.
