Panaji: Forest minister Vishwajit Rane on Saturday launched a whale shark conservation project along Goa’s coast with the Wildlife Trust of India, the state’s forest and fisheries departments, and Oracle India, on International Whale Shark Day.
To strengthen conservation, he said a reward of Rs 75,000 will be given to fisherfolk or individuals who rescue and release whale sharks and other endangered species protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, under the purview of the forest department.“Goa’s fishing community is our greatest strength, and with its unwavering commitment and collaboration, the state will continue to lead the way in protecting marine life.
We are privileged to have Francis Fernandes (Pele), who has played a vital role in the past, once again guiding and educating the fishing community in this mission. A decision has been taken to form a committee on marine life protection, headed by professor B C Choudhury with experts including Vivek Menon, Praveen Kumar Raghaw, Shamila Monteiro, Pele and myself,” said Rane.This committee will take key decisions to safeguard not just whale sharks, but all marine species, he said.
“Goa stands resolute in conserving its rich marine biodiversity for future generations. On International Whale Shark Day, we honour the gentle giant of our oceans, vital to the balance of marine ecosystems. In Goa, we are resolute in our determination to protect and conserve this magnificent species, ensuring our seas remain a safe haven for them. Together, let us strengthen our efforts towards marine conservation and safeguard biodiversity for generations to come,” said Rane.
