The Kerala Government Nurses Union (KGNU) has urged the Director of Medical Education (DME) to take steps to address the delay in appointing house surgeons at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kozhikode.

The KGNU functionaries said in a release that the tenure of the 2019 batch of house surgeons ended recently, and the new batch was yet to join services. This has put an additional burden on nurses and postgraduate doctors. They claimed that the nurses were already overburdened because of the existing staff shortage. It had been reported that at least three months would be required for the new batch to join duty.

The patients who seek treatment at the emergency ward, operating theatre, critical care ward, labour room, and outpatient departments were the worst hit, KGNU Kozhikode district president Sajith Cherandathur and secretary A. Shiraj said in a memorandum to the DME.
