Mexico saved their best football for the second half and buried Czechia’s World Cup hopes with a commanding 3-0 victory that secured top spot in Group A and sparked celebrations long before the final whistle.
For 45 minutes, this was a tense, scrappy affair. By the end, it had become a Mexican party.
Goals from Luis Chávez, Julián Quiñones and Álvaro Fidalgo completed a convincing win for the co-hosts, while legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa added another chapter to his remarkable career by becoming just the third player in FIFA World Cup history to appear in six different tournaments.
How The First Half Transpired
Czechia arrived knowing they desperately needed a result to keep their campaign alive, and they started with real intent.
Their best early chance came in the eighth minute when Adam Hložek’s deflected cross found Matěj Višinský inside the box. His effort drifted agonisingly wide of the far post, giving Mexico an early scare.
The hosts responded through quick transitions, with Luis Romo, Roberto Alvarado and Mora repeatedly trying to spring attacks. Yet both sides lacked sharpness in the final third, and promising moves often broke down at the crucial moment.
As frustration grew, so did the physicality. Challenges flew in, tempers simmered and the game became increasingly scrappy. Czechia enjoyed a spell of pressure midway through the half, while Mexico threatened through Reyes’ acrobatic bicycle-kick attempt and an Alvarado effort that sailed over the bar.
Neither side could find the breakthrough before halftime, and the contest remained delicately poised at 0-0.
Mexico Finally Find Their Spark
The deadlock lasted only 10 minutes after the restart.
In the 55th minute, Mexico turned defence into attack in devastating fashion. Romo released Chávez near the halfway line and the midfielder did the rest, charging forward before producing a calm, composed finish to finally break Czech resistance.
Suddenly, Mexico looked transformed.
Just six minutes later, they struck again. Mora threaded a superb pass through to Sánchez, whose effort was initially saved by Matěj Kovář. The rebound, however, fell kindly for Quiñones, who reacted quickest to tap home and double the advantage.
At 2-0, Czechia looked shell-shocked.
Ochoa’s Historic Entrance
The loudest roar of the night arrived in the 77th minute.
As Guillermo Ochoa emerged from the bench to replace Raúl Rangel, the crowd rose to its feet. The veteran goalkeeper’s introduction made him only the third player ever to feature in six different World Cups, a remarkable achievement that was celebrated like a goal inside the stadium.
By then, Czechia were already fading from the picture. And if there was any doubt left, Álvaro Fidalgo erased it deep into stoppage time.
In the 93rd minute, the midfielder put the finishing touch on a dominant second-half display, drilling a fierce strike into the top corner.
The goal sparked another eruption of noise as Mexico completed a statement victory and wrapped up a perfect group-stage campaign.
