A young couple in Odisha’s Koraput district was tied to a wooden plough and paraded through their village as a punishment for marrying within the same clan, police said.
The incident took place on Sunday in Nadimeitiki village, located in the Narayanpatna block of the tribal-dominated district.
A video has surfaced on social media showing the couple tied to a wooden plough and being forced to walk like a bovine.
Intent on punishing and humiliating a young couple for marrying against local societal norms, a mob in Odisha tied them to a yoke, like oxen, and made them plough a field. pic.twitter.com/RHFEjTHJdo— Amar Singh Chouhan (@amar_4inc) July 14, 2025
In the visuals, a group of men cam be seen tying a rope around the man’s neck. They were also seen hitting the couple with a stick as they walked.
News agency PTI citing locals reported the couple’s love marriage was seen as taboo because they belonged to the same clan, which violates traditional tribal customs. After the public humiliation, elders in village reportedly conducted a ‘purification ritual’ to ‘cleanse’ the community.
“According to our tradition, such relationships are believed to bring misfortune, especially affecting crops. This symbolic punishment was a warning," PTI quoted a villager as saying.
Following the ritual, the couple was permitted to stay with the husband’s father, the villager added.
PTI quoting Narayanpatna IIC Pramod Nayak reported that police are investigating the matter. “A team has been sent to investigate. The matter is under inquiry," Pramod Nayak added.
This comes days after a similar incident was reported in the state. Earlier on Wednesday, a young couple in Rayagada district was paraded with a yoke strapped to their shoulders and forced to plough a field in front of villagers and elders.
