Ola founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has been named in a police case of abetment to suicide after an employee allegedly died by suicide, leaving behind a 28-page note detailing harassment at the workplace.
The FIR, registered by Bengaluru police, also names Subrath Kumar Das, Ola’s Head of Vehicle Homologation and Regulation, along with others. The case was filed under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), following a complaint from the deceased employee’s brother, Ashwin Kannan.
The deceased, K Aravind (38), was working in Ola’s electric mobility division. On September 28, he allegedly consumed poison at his residence and later died in hospital. His family later found the detailed suicide note, in which Aravind accused senior executives of persistent harassment and pressure at work, Deccan Herald reported.
The complaint also includes allegations of financial irregularities. Aravind’s family claimed that his salary and incentives, amounting to Rs 17.46 lakh, were withheld by the company. They further alleged that Ola’s HR department failed to clarify several questionable money transfers to Aravind’s bank account.
“Soon after the complaint, we issued notices to the individuals named in the FIR, and they have submitted written explanations. Further investigations are underway," a senior police officer told the publication.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued on Monday, Ola said it has challenged the registration of the FIR in the Karnataka High Court, and that protective orders have been granted in its favour. The company also stated that Aravind never reported any grievance during his tenure and had no direct interaction with senior management, including the CEO.
“During his tenure, Aravind never raised any complaint or grievance regarding his employment or any harassment. His role also did not involve any direct interaction with the company’s top management, including the promoter," the company stated.
