Olympic 200m gold medallist Gabby Thomas has confirmed her withdrawal from this month’s World Championships in Tokyo due to an injury. The 28-year-old US sprint star revealed through a statement from her publicist that she has been struggling with an Achilles tendon issue since May.

The condition worsened in July, leading Thomas and her coach to make the difficult decision that there wasn’t enough time for her to recover fully before the World Championships in two weeks.

Thomas appeared to be off her peak form at the US trials in Eugene last month, finishing third in the 200m with a time of 22.20 seconds, significantly slower than her personal best of 21.60 seconds.

Expressing her thoughts on the withdrawal, Thomas acknowledged that fans might be disappointed but emphasised that it’s important to take care of oneself. She admitted, “Sometimes you simply can’t outwork an injury. Sometimes it’s about patience and making the right decision for the long term."

Thomas extended her best wishes to her Team USA teammates competing for medals in Tokyo.

Additionally, she expressed gratitude for the support she received after the announcement in a post on X, stating that she loves track and looks forward to racing again. The World Championships in Tokyo are scheduled from September 13-21.
