In a post on X, Sharif hailed Trump for his “instrumental role” in brokering peace between Thailand and Cambodia and credited him with saving “millions of lives across the globe.”

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif (R) speaks as US President Donald Trump listens during the Gaza summit in Sharm El-Sheikh on October 13, 2025.
Former Pakistani ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani has taken a sharp swipe at Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his effusive praise of US President Donald Trump.
In a post on X, Sharif hailed Trump for his “instrumental role" in brokering peace between Thailand and Cambodia and credited him with saving “millions of lives across the globe."
“My deep appreciation to President Donald Trump for his instrumental role in advancing peace through the KL Accord, the Gaza Peace Plan, and his resolute efforts for peace and stability in the Middle East and South Asia – saving millions of lives across the globe," Sharif wrote.
Reacting to the post, Haqqani mocked the prime minister, saying Sharif remains the frontrunner in what journalist Fareed Zakaria once jokingly described as the “Olympic sport of flattering Trump."
“Pakistan’s PM still in the lead for Gold in what Fareed Zakaria surmised might be the Olympic Sport of flattering Trump," Haqqani wrote. His remark was later reposted by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on X.
Sharif’s admiration for Trump is not new. Earlier this month, during the Peace Summit in Egypt, he praised the US president as “a man of peace" and revealed that Pakistan had nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
He went on to describe Trump as a “great president" with “exemplary leadership," saying, “I genuinely feel that he is the most genuine and most wonderful candidate for the Peace Prize because he has brought not only peace in South Asia, saved millions of people…"
The speech had sparked ridicule on social media, with several users accusing Sharif of embarrassing Pakistan by excessively flattering the US leader.
