Philippines Earthquake: Several buildings collapsed and were reduced to rubble after a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck the southern Philippines on Monday, triggering tsunami warnings and evacuations across the region.

Videos circulating on social media platforms showed dramatic scenes of structures crumbling as strong tremors shook parts of Mindanao. In one of the videos recorded outside a school campus, students gathered in an open field as a nearby building appeared to collapse amid the shaking.

Several buildings were seen crumbling into rubble as the ground shook violently. A part of a building in General Santos City collapsed following the tremor. Hospitals evacuated patients as a precaution, while schools moved students to safer locations on what was the first day of classes in some areas.

A powerful earthwuake of maginitude 7.8 struck off the coast of Mindanao in the southern Philippines on Monday, prompting tsunami warnings in the Philippines and neighboring Japan and Indonesia.

The epicenter was 13 km (8 miles) southwest of General Santos city on the island of Mindanao and had a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, news agency AP reported.

Germany’s GFZ geosciences centre initially estimated the quake at 8.2 magnitude before revising it downward.

Authorities in the Philippines and neighbouring Indonesia issued tsunami warnings shortly after the quake. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned that waves of up to three metres could hit some Philippine coastlines, while smaller waves were possible in parts of Indonesia and Malaysia.

The earthquake has killed at least one person and injured four others, according to AFP. Rescue teams were deployed as reports emerged of damaged buildings, collapsed homes and affected public infrastructure.

“Many buildings were affected, but I cannot enumerate them now because we are busy with ongoing rescues. A number of buildings collapsed. Some houses also collapsed," Master Sergeant Robert Dagon of the General Santos City police said.

In Sarangani province, Alabel police chief Benjie Ancheta said the local police station developed cracks during the quake.

“This is the strongest earthquake we’ve experienced," Ancheta told Reuters.

Hours later, a magnitude 6.1 aftershock struck the southern Philippines, according to the United States Geological Survey, raising concerns about further damage in affected areas.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a highly active seismic zone where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur frequently due to the movement of tectonic plates.
